Art, Social Change and Philanthropy
Ever wondered how art and social change are linked? How can a piece of art ignite change by simply existing?
For the longest time art, history and social change have been intertwined. They have a direct impact on each other as a result of social progress and development. Where the arts thrive, freedom of expression thrives.
Throughout history, artists have produced works that explore, reflect, and advocate for societal change. Now termed as socially engaged art, these artworks and artists strive to make the world a better place. They focusing on issues that need our attention. In doing so, art becomes a kind of social or political currency that can prove to be powerful. For example, an artwork might take the form of a website, a street performance, a story exchange, or an urban planning project.
While art and social change can give momentum to society, adding philanthropy to this dimension makes it even more impactful.
The Challenge
One of the biggest obstacles we have today is that, despite the fact that we might easily contribute, the concerns of others do not affect us. We do not feel strongly enough that we are a member of a bigger, global community. Giving people access to data most often leaves them feeling overwhelmed and disconnected, not empowered and poised for action. This is where cultural philanthropy can make a difference. It can make people feel and imbibe a notion of giving back to the community.
The Art of Giving – Philanthropy
The influential nature of art when combined with a purpose reaps fruitful results. Art and culture philanthropy give opportunities to empower youth, help the underprivileged or revitalize underserved communities. Giving is a fundamental part of human nature. And the foundation of a healthy, sustainable civil society.
Philanthropy is thousands of years old. Like modern philanthropists, ancient people practiced philanthropy for different reasons. Some reasons were kindness and concern for the common good. Some people used philanthropy as a way to gain recognition, prestige, and power. Others saw philanthropy as a way to gain the favor of the gods. As philanthropy takes on many forms, it’s fundamentally any act of charitable giving that improves the well-being of others.
In present times philanthropy is deemed good for business or seen as a trend. But it is more than just throwing money at a cause or organization. Philanthropy can be an effective tool to move forward with social transformation. It is said that if the world’s billionaires give 5% of their wealth annually to charitable causes, they could help fill funding gaps critical to eliminating poverty and achieving the Global Goals by 2030.
